Orlando Landscape Design: Why Fall Is the Right Time to Start Planning for Spring
As fall settles into the Orlando area and the holidays approach, many homeowners begin thinking about entertaining, enjoying the cooler weather, and spending more time outdoors.
But for homeowners considering a significant landscape renovation next year, fall is also one of the best times to begin the Orlando landscape design process.
I see this as particularly important for established homes and larger properties throughout Orlando, Winter Park, Windermere, Lake Mary, and Heathrow. These properties often have mature landscaping, existing pools, patios, and outdoor living areas that have evolved over many years.
Starting in the fall allows time to evaluate the property, explore design possibilities, and make important decisions before construction becomes the immediate priority. For larger projects, that preparation can make a significant difference in the finished result.
Fall Gives You Time to Make Better Decisions
If your goal is to begin a major landscape renovation in late winter or spring, waiting until spring to start the design process can create unnecessary pressure.
Planning a landscape renovation is different from deciding when to install plants or begin construction. The design needs to account for everything you want to accomplish before the work begins.
You may be considering a pool renovation, new outdoor living areas, hardscaping, lighting, privacy, or improvements to an existing landscape. Each decision can affect another part of the property.
Beginning in the fall provides time to consider different layouts, evaluate materials, coordinate related improvements, and refine the design.
It doesn’t mean every decision must be made immediately or that a spring construction date is guaranteed.
A Larger Property Should Be Looked at as a Whole
When I first visit a property, one of the things I look at is what should stay, what should change, and how the different areas could work together better.
There may be beautiful mature trees worth preserving, existing hardscape that still serves its purpose, or established landscaping that needs refinement rather than replacement.
Other areas may no longer fit the way the family lives or entertains.
A pool may feel disconnected from the house. A covered patio may be too small for gatherings. Walkways may not connect spaces naturally, or privacy may be lacking where it matters most.
Existing trees, sun exposure, drainage, and irrigation also influence what can realistically be accomplished.
These considerations are especially important when planning larger outdoor living environments where pools, patios, landscaping, lighting, and entertaining spaces need to function together.
That is why I believe the entire property should be evaluated before individual improvements are designed.
Good Landscape Design Takes Time and Refinement
I often compare a major landscape renovation to redesigning the entire interior of a home.
There are a lot of decisions to make.
You are considering layout, materials, scale, color, lighting, circulation, and how one space relates to another. Outdoors, those decisions must also account for the architecture of the home and the surrounding environment.
Our landscape design process begins with understanding the property and how the homeowner wants to use it. From there, we develop concepts, evaluate alternatives, and refine the details before moving toward installation.
Sometimes relocating a patio improves circulation and preserves an important view. Changing a walkway may create a better connection between outdoor spaces. Retaining a mature tree can influence the layout of an entire landscape.
The initial design is a starting point. We study the possibilities, make adjustments, and refine the plan until the overall direction makes sense.
The Holidays Can Reveal How You Really Use Your Property
One advantage of planning during the fall is that the holidays and cooler months give homeowners an opportunity to observe their outdoor spaces differently.
When friends and family visit, pay attention to where people naturally gather.
Does everyone gravitate toward one patio while another area goes unused? Is there enough comfortable, covered space for entertaining? Do guests move naturally between the house, pool, and outdoor living areas?
Think about the views from inside your home as well.
Which parts of the landscape catch your attention? Are there areas you would prefer to screen for privacy? Are mature trees or existing features worth making part of the new design?
These observations can reveal things that are not always obvious when discussing a landscape renovation.
Understanding how homeowners actually experience their property is just as important as understanding what they want to change.
Planning Ahead Doesn’t Mean Everything Must Be Replaced
One misconception about larger landscape renovations is that creating a new outdoor environment requires starting over.
An established property may already have valuable landscape features, mature trees, or hardscape worth preserving.
Often, refining an established landscape involves improving the relationships between existing features rather than replacing everything.
A thoughtful plan identifies what deserves to remain, what needs improvement, and where new elements can create a more complete outdoor environment.
Making those decisions early also helps establish priorities and determine whether improvements should be completed together or in carefully planned phases.
The goal is not necessarily to do more.
It is to make the right improvements.
Be Ready When Spring Arrives
For homeowners considering a significant landscape renovation, fall is an opportunity to begin the process with time on your side.
Rather than waiting until spring to explore ideas, you can use the preceding months to understand your property’s possibilities, work through important decisions, and develop a coordinated design.
At BLG Environmental Services, our approach to Orlando landscape design begins with understanding the entire property and how you want to experience it.
For a home you plan to enjoy for many years, the goal is not simply to start quickly.
It is to create something that feels right when it is finished.
